MISSIONS - CONSTRUCTION
Heritage Discovery Center
Notes on plastering: the front and southwest end were lime plastered. The rough adobe wall was scored about 8 inches each way. Mortar and tile chips were placed in these grooves, thus forming a "key". A first coat was followed immediately by a richer mix of lime and sand, which, after being rubbed with a stone, produced a hard, smooth finish. This finally was whitewashed or painted in color. The main rooms were also lime plastered. Mud plaster was applied directly to the adobe and whitewashed on the two other facades and in remaing rooms and chapels.

More plastering information forthcoming
