Priced Exclusively at $15,000 This rare and exceptionally fine Mechanical Drafting Table dates to the height of the Steam Age. The well-crafted drawing board is provided with slots for a parallel rule and has an unusual reticulating tool tray made to remain horizontal regardless of the drawing board angle.
Ingenious cast-iron and bronze mechanisms allow both the height and drawing angle to be adjusted. The hardware is entirely original and is in good working order. This table is of European origin. Its early style of construction and manufacture presages the mechanically similar cast iron based tables that were in use in the United States from around 1885 to around 1940. The exceptional quality of workmanship indicates that this table was made for a highly skilled professional, most likely an Architect or Engineer.
This piece likely remained in service well into the 20th century, as evidenced by a careful repair on the drawing board and trace marks showing both older (pinholes) and modern usage (razor cut lines and a casual cigarette burn).
Modern Steampunk style owes much to the mechanical designs developed during the Steam Age, some of which could easily have been created on this table.
